Swim with Dolphins!

Swim with the Dolphins on your next vacation in Hawaii, Mexico or the Caribbean

Has swimming with dolphins been one of your lifelong dreams?  Fulfilling that dream is easier than you think because many cruise ports and tropical vacation destinations offer dolphin programs.

A favorite experience is swimming with a baby dolphin and its mother!  This is an educational program as well as loads of fun.  You will learn about dolphin nursing, their anatomy, physiology, echolocation and the close relationship between the calf (baby) and its mom during the first 5 years.  You will also be able to throw hoops and balls to both mom and baby.  Kids 8 to 80 love this experience and the dolphins love it too!.

Is speed and action more to your liking?  How about swimming with dolphins in the Caribbean Sea?  This program affords you the opportunity to jump right in with the dolphins and let them pull you around the water!  What could be more fun?  Dolphins are very “people loving” and you will really experience the special bond between dolphins and humans while swimming in their world.  They love to kiss you, sing for you, and show off a bit by giving you a ride on their belly.

On Oahu in Hawaii, Sea Life Park has a great program for small children called Dolphin Encounter.  The Dolphin Encounter takes place in shallow water, but the kids still get to experience a kiss and handshake from their new friends.  A Royal Swim is also offered at Sea Life Park and during this swim the dolphins will pull you around by their dorsal fin or give the ultimate “foot push”. You can feel all the strength and energy the dolphin has to offer as they jet you across the water from the bottom of your feet.  Wow!

Dolphin Quest on the Big Island of Hawaii, offers many of the same programs as Sea Life Park plus older kids and adults will enjoy shadowing a trainer for a day.  Beside pool interaction with the dolphins, participants help prepare the dolphins meals, help with health exams and learn some basic training skills.  Dolphin Quest is housed at the Hilton Waikoloa and many rooms have views of the dolphins.

Popular vacation destinations and cruise itineraries include Jamaica, the Bahamas and Mexico and each has a swim with dolphins program.  Ocho Rios has Dolphin CovePlaya Del Carmen, about 1 hour south of Cancun, has a great Eco-Park and dolphin program at Xcaret.

And in the Bahamas head to Atlantis on Paradise Island.  Atlantis is a magical place with a fantastic water park, but there’s also a swim with the dolphins program right on property!  The Atlantis is home to the Katrina dolphins which were swept away from their home in Mississippi during Hurricane Katrina.  After being rescued and nursed back to health, all of the dolphins were eventually transported to Atlantis to fully recover and reside at Dolphin Cay’s new state-of-the-art habitat.

Wherever you vacation, I strongly recommend you make reservations prior to your arrival.  Swim with the dolphins programs are extremely popular and often sell out months in advance. Vacation with the French and Dutch on a tiny tropical island in the Caribbean

Last spring on an Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Valor, I had the pleasure of visiting the lovely tropical island of St. Maarten. One of the most fascinating things about the island is that it is actually two countries. The Dutch side of the island is called St. Maarten and the French side St. Martin. Our tour guide said he lives on the Dutch side and his girlfriend on the French, so every time he calls it’s an international call and they talk several times a day… now that’s love!

Currency is another difference: the Dutch Side uses the Antille Guilder and the French side uses the Euro. Luckily, we were also able to use US Dollars to buy our ice cream cones and US dollars are also accepted at the colorful open air markets where you’ll find an array of local crafts, clothing and food. Shopping is one of the biggest draws for St. Maarten/St. Martin and with duty free shops it makes sense to make jewelry purchases on the island. The most amazing diamonds, tanzanite, emeralds, and pearls are on display in jewelry stores throughout the area and you can practice your bargaining skills here.

Of course, St. Maarten/St. Martin has many, many beaches. Over 37, in fact. What a wonderful destination for a beach wedding, or renewing your vows. The best part is that you can give your guests a little European flavor and a lot of the Caribbean! And while planning a wedding so far away can be difficult, many of the hotels have wedding departments that offer advice on everything from the license to flowers to catering and music, and of course, a beautiful venue. I have included several pictures of locations for a fabulous destination wedding!

Families love St. Maarten/St. Martin, too. Wouldn’t your children be fascinated by a Butterfly Farm? You can walk through hundreds of butterflies fluttering around you and since each stage of the butterfly’s life is on display, it will be a learning experience! Another great travel adventure is the scenic hike to Fort Amsterdam, which is several hundred years old and older kids will love spending the day on a racing yacht or parasailing!

Atlantis – The ultimate family resort in Paradise Island, Bahamas

Water Slide at the Atlantis

The Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas, is the ultimate family destination resort.  I recently had the pleasure of a personal tour of the Atlantis.  What an experience!

The entire resort is centered around water, water, and more water!  From the amazing Aquaquest, that features a 120-foot tall water slide to The Abyss, a 200 foot long body slide that makes a 50-foot near vertical drop and plunges into a lagoon infested with alligators!  Other water slides and current rides shoot you through a glass tunnel with sharks all around you!  Talk about heart-pounding!

We enjoyed meandering through The Dig, which is actually an underground maze of passageways. Throughout the labyrinth we discovered the ruins of the ancient city of Atlantis, complete with artifacts and hieroglyphs!  Most amazing, though, was being surrounded by sea animals: stingrays, sharks, jelly fish, sea anemones and so many different kinds of fish!  Many of the stingrays love to ham it up for the camera.

Atlantis recently opened their own Dolphin Cay, which allows for very special interaction dolphins.   The kids love playing with these fun loving animals!

And we can’t forget the beach and swimming pools for those of us who just want to lounge in the sun or under one of the umbrellas.  There are 13 different swimming areas at this resort.  There are zero-entry pools, my favorite, children’s pools, and a 7 acre protected lagoon, where snorkeling is fantastic!

Of course, while at the Atlantis you would like to have somewhere to lay your head at night, the rooms are beautiful.  Accommodations vary from tower to tower, the Royal Tower being the most luxurious, but the Coral and Beach Towers are undergoing a full upgrade, to bring them in line with the Royal Tower.    Of course if you really want the most luxurious suite at the resort, the Bridge Suite, might be the place for you…that is if you feel the need to pay $25,000 per night!  That’s right, $25,000 per night.  Oprah loves this suite!

If you prefer to have a bit more than a hotel room for your family, Harborside at Atlantis, in Marina Village, across the lagoon from the Royal Tower, offers one, two and three bedroom villas.  The villas are like a home-away-from-home, complete with a full kitchen.  The Reef Atlantis, which is located right on Paradise Beach, is the newest addition and features studio and 1 bedroom units.  The Reef units also have full kitchens, which make them a great choice for small families.

Dining at the Atlantis is an experience all its own. Restaurants range from gourmet to quick and casual.  Southwestern cuisine to Japanese and everything in between.  With 22 different restaurants and 20 bars and lounges, there is sure to be at least one to please everyone.  Also, Back by popular demand is Atlantis’ meal plans.  You can pre-purchase one of 3 different meal plans and best of all: children 6 and under eat free.

Oh, and don’t forget the Casino!  Atlantis has one of only a few casinos in Nassau.  It has all the gaming you would expect.  But what you wouldn’t expect are the Dale Chihuly glass sculptures!  A nice touch of home!

When you are ready to experience all that the Atlantis has to offer, please give me a call!

Jade Mountain is a sanctuary in St Lucia

When only the best will do, think Jade Mountian in St Lucia for an unforgettable honeymoon or vacation!  You’ll be treated to every luxury imaginable from a breathtaking view, to menus that change daily and accommodations so unique and luxurious they are called “sanctuaries” rather than rooms.

According to management, one happy bride burst into tears when she saw her honeymoon destination and many a couple has checked in never to be seen again…   Take a look at the slide show and you’ll see why!

This resort starts with one of the most beautiful locations in all of the Caribbean overlooking the glorious Pitons and Anse Chastenet beach.  Seen from below, Jade Mountain appears (and is) an engineering marvel.

Individual walkways or sky bridges are the only access to the open air rooms, so each sanctuary is truly private despite the open air design.  There are three levels of accommodation appropriately named Sun, Moon and Star all featuring a private in room pool, custom designed furnishings, decadent and sensual bathrooms and that billion dollar view.  Also in the room is a bar stocked to your specifications and room service is available 24 hours a day.

If you do decide to leave your sanctuary you’ll find a gourmet restaurant with a menu that changes daily, a rooftop terrace and lounge, fitness center and health club.

Anse Chastenet beach lies below Jade Mountain with golden sand, hammocks and some of the best snorkeling on St Lucia.  Nearby are the Pitons and tropical rainforest for hiking and adventure and a water taxi provides easy access to Soufriere or Marigot Bay for other restaurants and day activities.

All in all Jade Mountain is one of my favorite Caribbean destinations when it’s time to splurge on a once in a lifetime honeymoon or vacation.  I hope you’ll call me if this is your idea of paradise!

The best travel agents travel!

The best travel agents travel and in 2007 Totem Travel was in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, the good ol’ U.S.A. and on the high seas with Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Jennefer started the year with an all inclusive vacation at Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort.  Her next stop was Las Vegas for a special family birthday, followed by an  NCL Alaska cruise and a week in France touring the Loire Valley to complete her France Specialist certification program.  She wrapped up the year with some fun in the sun on the lovely island of St Lucia and is sadly “grounded” until April when she’s off again to Scotland

Sandi spent a week in Jamaica, tested her slot machine skills in Reno & Lake Tahoe, hosted a group of friends on a Royal Caribbean fall foliage cruise to New England and visited the Big Island of Hawaii in December.  Some of her favorite vacation resorts were Sandals Dunns River for couples only, Kona Village for Hawaii “the way it used to be” and the Hapuna Prince Resort.

My travels included a family vacation sightseeing in Washington D.C., three weeks island hopping in the Caribbean and a Christmas trip to Playa del Carmen Mexico.  My favorites were Jade Mountain, Ladera and Jalousie Plantation for an intimate and very private villa style honeymoon, Beaches Negril or Iberostar Paraiso Maya for an activity packed all inclusive family vacation, and Sandals Whitehouse or Sandals Grande Antigua for the newest “luxury included” couples only resorts.

As a rule, the staff at Totem Travel is pretty much office bound January through March booking everyones’ sun breaks, school vacations and summer honeymoons.  But you can count on us to hit the road again by April because the best travel agents travel and we’ve got some of the finest travel junkies in the business!
