Fly to the city on the bay, San Francisco, for a two night stay. San Francisco is named for its patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi. Your hotel is conveniently located near exciting Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco's most popular destination. Rooms are available for check in after 3:00 p.m. Enjoy dinner. Join Caravan for an 8:00 p.m. welcome briefing. D | | Day 2 | San Francisco | Wine Country, Bay Cruise : View San Francisco highlights on a brief morning sightseeing tour. See Union Square, Chinatown and Nob Hill. Then, head over the Golden Gate Bridge. Next, continue to California's wine country. See the historic Sonoma Mission on Sonoma Plaza. Here, in 1846 when the West was being settled, rowdy fun-loving pioneers raised the flag of the Bear Republic, the beginning of the state of California. This afternoon visit a winery and sample local wines. Return to San Francisco. Stop at the Golden Gate Bridge overlook. The world's most photographed bridge is two miles long and has more than 80,000 miles of wires. Golden Gate Bridge is constantly being repainted by a crew of 31 painters to combat the corrosive effects of the salt air. Enjoy a late afternoon cruise on San Francisco Bay. See Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge and the beautiful San Francisco skyline. B | | Day 3 | Yosemite Park | San Joaquin, Sierra Nevadas : Your morning is free to explore San Francisco and lively Fisherman's Wharf. You may wish to catch a cable car or just relax and watch the sea lions barking at the Pier. This afternoon head east into the fertile San Joaquin Valley, the bread-basket of California. Then, climb through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Pass through old gold mining towns from the great California gold rush. Arrive at your hotel, the Yosemite View Lodge, for a relaxing two night stay. B | | Day 4 | Yosemite Park | Yosemite National Park : A full day of adventure awaits you in Yosemite National Park. Established in 1890, this 1,000 square mile park was first brought to the public's attention by naturalist John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club. Enjoy a morning tour of the scenic Yosemite valley floor in an open-air vehicle. See cedar, pine and fir trees, magnificent waterfalls and two towering granite monoliths known as Half Dome and El Capitan. Your afternoon is at leisure to explore Yosemite Park. Free time to hike the nature trails, rent a bike or just simply relax in the splendor of one of the most beautiful places in the world. B | | Day 5 | Monterey Bay | Monterey, 17-Mile Drive, Carmel : This morning head west past the San Luis Reservoir, part of the vast California irrigation project. Next, to Monterey. Monterey achieved fame through the writings of its native son, John Steinbeck, who chronicled the activities of the colorful fishing section of town called Cannery Row. Free time to explore Cannery Row. Then, enjoy the 17-mile coastal drive, lined with palatial homes and delightful natural wonders, such as Seal Beach and the Lone Cypress. See the famous Pebble Beach golf course. Next, enjoy a brief visit to the town of Carmel by the Sea. Evening at leisure at your hotel on Monterey Bay. B | | Day 6 | Beverly Hills | Big Sur, Redwoods, Hearst Castle : Continue south along the Pacific Ocean this morning through the Big Sur. This spectacular 80 mile drive between Carmel and San Simeon is considered the most beautiful coastal drive in the world. On one side is the sparkling turquoise Pacific Ocean with its pounding surf, and on the other is the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. Stop at a redwood grove for close-up views of these towering ancients. Old-growth Pacific coast redwoods can live for 2000 years, grow to more than 350 feet tall and attain a diameter of over 35 feet. Next, visit William Randolph Hearst's estate and the Hearst Castle. Hearst originally built the castle to house his collection of Medieval and Renaissance treasures, and eventually turned the castle into his dream home. See Hearst's swimming pool. Actor Cary Grant, a frequent guest, considered the pool one of the most romantic spots on earth. Continue to Santa Barbara. Stroll along the downtown pier for beautiful ocean vistas. Then, to Los Angeles and your hotel, for a relaxing two night stay. Evening at leisure. B | | Day 7 | Beverly Hills | Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Getty : Morning visit to Rodeo Drive, America's most celebrated shopping district. Explore this three block stretch of shops and boutiques. Then, drive along the Sunset Strip en route to Hollywood. Look up high in the hills and see the famous Hollywood sign, 50 feet high and 400 feet wide. Stop at Mann's (Grauman's) Chinese Theater to see the hand and footprints of such stars as the Marx Brothers, Douglas Fairbanks and Marilyn Monroe. Also, see the imprints of Jimmy Durante's nose, John Wayne's fist, and Betty Grable's legs. Free time to explore Hollywood's famous sidewalk, known as the Walk of the Stars. See the dramatic entrance of the Kodak Theatre, site of the Academy Awards. Later, visit the world famous J. Paul Getty Museum. The museum is a modern architectural masterpiece built at a cost of several billion dollars. View the extensive, priceless art collection. The museum houses European paintings (including paintings by Cezanne, Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir), illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, drawings and photographs. Return to Beverly Hills. Farewell dinner in Beverly Hills. BD | | Day 8 | Beverly Hills | Beverly Hills : After breakfast, Caravan transfers you from your hotel to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) arriving at 9:00 a.m. Schedule flights after 11:00 a.m. Thanks for vacationing with Caravan.
